John Doe and Another Unusual Arabic Cognate

leave a comment »

John Doe in English means “fulano” or “fulano de tal” in Spanish.

The Spanish word “fulano” means “fulan” in Arabic.

This is another instance of a non-“Al” cognate between Spanish and Arabic.

Here’s another:

macabre=macabro=ma cabr

ma=”place of”

cabr=”grave”

Creepy. The etymological dictionaries I have looked at (most recently, the one published by Oxford University Press) failed to pick up the source and only referred to English’s adoption of the French term.
