There was nowhere else to go. I had no illusions. She would go back home and say she knew nothing about anything and perhaps she would get away with it. No one would believe me. They would say that I took advantage of her because she was so young and I should be ashamed of myself just because of that.

But they had never seen her in the early morning when the light slipped through the drapes, when her eyes were still closed, she was so precious.

—Pacifica, we have to go. We have to go.

But she wasn’t awake and heard nothing that I said. If I stayed they would find me. If they found her she still had a chance.

—Wake up, I have to say goodbye.

But still there was no movement. Whatever she saw in her dreams was better than the world we were in.

—Come on, Pacifica, wake up.
