Kim Kardashian, Lily Langtry and Honey Boo Boo

Kim Kardashian was in Bahrain yesterday, causing a minor kerfluffle because religious fundamentalists objected to her presence. Never mind that she was promoting a milk shake shop, a type of institution normally welcomed in Bahrain since no alcoholic shakes would grace the menu.
Kim Kardashian is famous for being famous. While we might think that this is a recent phenomenon—dating back no further than the John Sex and the other so-called ‘’club kids’’ of the 1980’s, the institution of the ‘professional beauty’’ has been around since at least the 19th century, when Lily Langtry and Sarah Bernhardt played their parts to the delight of an eager public. Some may say that Kim has no talent, but I think this is unfair criticism. After all, she stars on a television reality show based on her life. If anyone thinks that reality shows are anything other than scripted, they need to pay more attention. This is not to say that much isn’t ad libbed. On her show, Kim plays a character, even though that character is supposedly herself. It is not. As Rimbaud wrote, ‘’Je est un autre.’’ The same applies here.
Though I doubt that the Thompsons of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo have given much thought to this history.
