KFC in Fallujah

Fox News has breathlessly reported the existence of a KFC outlet in Fallujah as proof of progress in the war in Iraq, the neocon victory in the Middle East or something else that I’m not really clear on. The story is reported here: http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/kfc_in_fallujah_too_fingerlick.php

It comes as a surprise to many people that American fast food franchises as well as many other American and European franchises are alive and well in the Middle East. MacDonald’s has all sorts of franchises in Riyadh, as does KFC, not to mention Burger King, Subway, TGIF, Chili’s, Applebee’s and many other fine restaurants. Despite their U.S. bankruptcy, even Kenny Roger’s Roasters survived until recently.

The existence of a KFC in Iraq isn’t news. The absence of a KFC is what would surprise me.  BTW, the Iranians can’t get access to this fine cuisine because of the embargo. To get their happy meal fix or a tasty soft-serve Dairy Queen cone, Iranians must travel to Bahrain or Dubai. There is a business opportunity here, if anyone is paying attention.
